**Winter Safety Tips Shared by St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital and Canyon County Paramedics**
As winter approaches, families are being reminded to prioritize safety while enjoying seasonal activities such as skiing, sledding, and snowboarding. St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital, in collaboration with Canyon County Paramedics in Caldwell, Idaho, has shared some essential tips to ensure children stay safe and healthy during winter fun.
Here are the key safety tips being emphasized:
- **Helmets and Goggles:** Helmets and properly fitted goggles are essential for children participating in activities like skiing, snowboarding, and sledding to reduce the risk of head injuries.
- **Sunscreen Protection:** Even in winter, the sun’s rays can reflect off the snow and cause sunburn. Adults are advised to apply sunscreen and lip balm to children before outdoor play.
- **Wear Layers:** To keep warm, dress children and babies in multiple layers. A general rule is that infants and children should wear one more layer than adults. Additionally, snow gear should be removed when children are inside vehicles.
- **Hydration:** Drinking water is just as important in the colder months. Ensure children drink plenty of water before, during, and after outdoor activities to prevent dehydration.
- **Safe Sledding:** Roads, even when closed, remain unsafe for sledding. Snow banks can obstruct visibility, and icy conditions make stopping vehicles difficult.
These tips come as a reminder that safety practices can help minimize the risks associated with winter activities, allowing families to focus on fun. For further questions, St. Luke’s Children’s encourages contacting them via email at injuryprevention@slhs.org.
Stay safe and enjoy the winter season responsibly!
