Idaho Faces Severe Whooping Cough Outbreak: Over 850 Cases

**Whooping Cough Outbreak in Idaho Exceeds 850 Cases, Primarily Affecting School-Aged Children**

Idaho is currently facing a significant outbreak of Bordetella pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, with over 850 reported cases so far in 2024. The majority of these cases are occurring among school-age children and teenagers. Health officials are sounding the alarm as infants and individuals with asthma or respiratory conditions face a heightened risk of severe complications from the disease.

Whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory illness that begins with symptoms similar to the common cold, including a sore throat, low-grade fever, a runny nose, and mild coughing. These symptoms can escalate into severe coughing fits, characteristic of the condition. Nicknamed “the 100-day cough,” the illness can last for months and has the potential to spread from person to person starting with initial symptoms and continuing for at least two weeks after the onset of coughing.

Health experts stress that most infants who contract the disease are infected by someone in their household. This highlights the importance of preventative measures to protect at-risk individuals, particularly during the holiday season when families tend to gather.

Residents are urged to take action by ensuring they are up to date on immunizations that can reduce the spread and severity of pertussis. For younger children, the DTaP vaccine protects against diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping cough. Preteens and adults are encouraged to receive the Tdap booster. While vaccinated individuals can occasionally contract pertussis, the vaccines strongly reduce the likelihood of severe illness and protect vulnerable household members.

For further information on vaccine types, visit [CDC Pertussis Vaccines](www.cdc.gov/pertussis/vaccines/types.html).

This outbreak has prompted local organizations, including the Caldwell School District, to notify families about the risks and the importance of preventative care. To learn more or to access resources, visit the [Idaho Immunization Coalition](https://idahoimmunizationcoalition.org/).

Health officials recommend taking proactive steps to mitigate the spread of this highly contagious illness and safeguarding the health of loved ones, especially the most vulnerable, during this critical time.
