Canyon County Voters Face Ambulance Tax Levy Decision
Staff Report / Caldwelllocal.org
On November 5, 2024, voters in Canyon County, Idaho, will have the opportunity to decide on a proposed permanent override tax levy for the Canyon County Ambulance District. The measure seeks to authorize the Board of the Ambulance District to increase its property tax budget by $5,825,000. This increase is intended to commence on October 1, 2025, and will be permanently added to the district's tax budget.
The revenue generated from this tax increase is aimed at addressing current and future demands for emergency medical services. Specifically, it will be used for hiring paramedics and EMTs, equipping and maintaining operations, repairing existing ambulances, purchasing additional ambulances, and supporting the infrastructure necessary for emergency medical services.
As of now, the Canyon County Ambulance District levies a tax of $10.14 per $100,000 of taxable assessed value. This is the third time the district has sought a levy override. The first successful levy was approved by voters in 2001 to build, equip, and staff two new stations. In May 2024, however, a more recent attempt for a levy override was unsuccessful, failing to achieve the required supermajority.
For the upcoming ballot, the approval of the levy will again require a supermajority vote to pass.
